The Charismatic Community at St. Barnabas is one of the oldest on Long Island dating back to the early 1970s when the Charismatic Renewal began in the Catholic Church.   The weekly prayer meetings bring together people seeking to Praise the Lord.   The Lord graces the community through the manifestation of the charismatic gifts of the spirit described in the writings of the early church and appearing in Corinthians and Galatians in the Bible.  

IN THE WAY provides upbeat contemporary music to the Charismatic Prayer meetings, leading worship and praise through song.  The band in various forms has done so for upwards of a decade, and will continue well into the future.

The Office of Charismatic Renewal of the Diocese of Rockville Center has been closed and merged into the evangelism office (John Palmer Ph.D.  is the new coordinator: http://www.drvc.org/renewal_link1.html).  What had previously been a diocese sponsored monthly gathering of the charismatic communities of the region continues under our own auspices without diocese involvement.  Fr. Peter Dooley has been gracious in allowing the Renewal Center to continue to meet at St. Barnabas.  These renewal center events CONTINUE to give the members of all the neighboring prayer groups a sense of community with each other through shared worship, praise and manifestations of the spiritual gifts.

Each Renewal Center gathering is lead by a praise leader from a different parish on a rotating basis.  Each also has a planned event such as a guest speaker or a special intention mass.  IN THE WAY provides music ministry to the renewal center which replaces the normal Monday night prayer meeting at St. Barnabas.

A monthly liturgy is held at St. Brigid's geared toward teens and young adults.  It features contemporary music and Youth Group participation.   IN THE WAY was asked to bring our upbeat style of music to this mass and lead a teen music ministry.

The Youth Worship Workshop is our work with these young musicians and vocalists incorporating them into the band for this mass.  Weekly rehearsals prepare the group for the monthly mass.  All the youth of St. Brigid's are invited to participate and share their gifts with the group and the parish.

The Renewal Office of the diocese has been closed and merged as an apostolate into the Office of New Evangelism with John Palmer as coodinator (http://www.drvc.org/renewal_link1.html).   

The annual days of prayer which were held each Spring with a guest speaker and a concluding mass, and an annual night of Intercessory Prayer for Priests were among these diocese sponsored events.  

The vigil of Pentecost (below) is an example of the continuation of joint prayer group sponsored events for the charismatic community of Long Island.

IN THE WAY provides music ministry for these inspiring events.

May 26 - Vigil of Pentecost Evening of Praise, Worship and Prayer with Fr. Anthony Ozelli  will be held at St. Barnabas Holy Family Chapel (lower church) 7:30pm 

June 2 - Pentecost Day of Prayer ("pray-in") at Our Lady of Grace Retreat House in Manhasset.  10am-3pm

September 15 - A Day of Renewal and Prayer with Sr. Joan Kellenberg at St. Brigid's in Westbury.

November 3 - A Day of Renewal and Prayer with Sr. Joan Kellenberg at Cure of Ars in Merrick.

In The Way was invited to provide music for the celebrations of Our Lady of Peace Lay Carmelite Community, a community of the Third Order Carmelites of the North American Province of St. Elias.  Our own Andrea Waldron is the leader of the  community in Lynbrook.

An anual mass in celebration of the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and an anual day (regional event) at the Douglaston Seminary  are regularly scheduled events.
